What is the intrauterine contraceptive device?

Intrauterine contraceptive devices are small t-shaped devices which are inserted into the uterus so as to prevent pregnancy. The shape of the device is congruent with that of the uterine cavity. So it sits snugly within the uterus. Depending on the type of intrauterine device, it releases various substances into the uterine cavity at very slow rates.

Sto Te Cu 375 is an intrauterine device with flexible side-arms. It is made with a combination of high-density polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and barium sulphate in a weight ratio of 44/36/20. A copper wire with 99% purity is wound around the stem, giving a total copper surface area of 375 mm2. A monofilament nylon thread is attached to the stem. The stem length of the standard device is 35 mm.

"Mirena"  is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. This means it’s more effective than most other forms of birth control, including condoms, the pill, or the hormonal patch, ring, or injection. When used to help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, Mirena has been shown to be 90% effective after six months. It can decrease your bleeding by more than half.

Mirena works to prevent pregnancy in several ways:

• stopping the release of an egg from your ovary
• thinning the lining of your uterus, which makes it harder for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus (and also reduces your menstrual bleeding)

Mirena must be inserted by a healthcare provider. This should be done within seven days of the start of one of your monthly periods. Your doctor will need to check your device four to six weeks after it’s placed, and once per year after that.
